The Cruquius steam pumping station not far from Amsterdam Airport is an industrial monument of world format. The 19th century pumping station was built for the gigantic task of draining the big Haarlem lake which had become a threat to the city of Amsterdam. Please click on a photo to enlarge

In 1933 the Cruquius became the first official industrial monument in the world. The pumping station was named a Historical Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1991. Nowadays Amsterdam airport (5 meters below sealevel) takes up a large part of the bottom of the former lake.
