| Historical towncentres
Already in the Middle Ages many towns in the Netherlands
flourished. Especially in the north and east these towns were
favourably situated on rivers and thus profited from the Hanseatic
League.
Later, in the 17th century, the VOC brought growth and prosperity
to many cities in the western part of the Netherlands. Churches,
monasteries, courts of almshouses, townhalls, town ramparts,
city gates, canals, bridges, warehouses, weighhouses, canalside
houses and ports are evidence of the rich past of many Dutch
cities.
Especially the focus on transportation by water is a notable
feature of those cities. The oldest existing stone house in
the Netherlands dates from circa 1130.

The Vermeer Room in historical Delft
© Hotel de Emauspoort
The 'Vermeer Room' in Hotel de Emauspoort has a picturesque view of one of the most painted places in Delft. The historical town of Delft, the city of Johannes Vermeer, William of Orange, Hugo de Groot (Grotius), Anthoni van Leeuwenhoek, the Delft Blue pottery & tiles, the royal Tomb in the New Church and picturesque canals is worth a visit. If Johannes Vermeer could return to his place of birth, he would soon feel at home in his very own 'Vermeer Room'.
